The Los Angeles Lakers have been struggling this season even when they have an improved roster from the one they started last year the 2022-23 campaign. But after 34 games, the team is currently with a 17-17 record while last season they were 14-20 which isn't that much different, at least not from what was expected of this roster.
The main problem for many hasn't been the many injuries that have affected the team but coach Darvin Ham's incapacity to deal with them and to have the continuity the team deserved and that LA's organization led by GM Rob Pelinka bet on by bringing last season's core back.
Coach Ham threw continuity out the window as he hasn't used his best starting lineup from last season's end of the regular season and the one that worked the most in the 2023 playoffs with D'Angelo Russell, Austin Reaves, LeBron James, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Anthony Davis. This lineup hasn't started at all in this campaign.
Now NBA insider Zach Lowe on his latest Podcast, in so many words (severely paraphrased): “THE LAKERS ARE AS BAD AS THE WIZARDS OFFENSIVELY. THEY’RE NOT GOING ANYWHERE IF THEY’RE THIS BAD OFFENSIVELY. SO THEIR RESPONSE IS: START THEIR WORSE OFFENSIVE LINEUP?! DON’T THINK THAT’S GONNA WORK.”
Despite returning to the starting lineup, according to NBA insider Jovan Buha, Rui Hachimura isn't happy with what coach Darvin Ham is doing as he doesn't know his role within the team.
