Former Lakers executive bold prediction of Kobe & O´Neal´s greatness

Today is easy to see where former Lakers executive Jerry West was coming from when they made a bold prediction of what was to happen with the team having Shaquille O´Neal and Kobre Bryant sharing the court.

At the moment, it was unpredictable to the rest of the world what the duo would be doing for the team. But Jerry West knew then and told Shaquille O´Neal the moment he was signed. So even now, being an executive for the Lakers LA rival, West has fond memories of his first “love.”

The newest episode of the Lakers documentary “Legacy: the true story of the LA Lakers” narrates the BTS of the LA team, Shaquille O´Neal telling the story of when West told him what was about to happen: 

“The First thing Jerry West did when I got there: he sat me down, and he said: ´Look up´. As I look up, he says, ´Son, if you can come here and win multiple championships, your name will be up there one day´. He said, ´It ain´t going to take long. I just signed this kid. You and he are gonna win a lot of championships.”

The numbers retired are: Bill Russell´s 6, Kobe Bryant´s 8 & 24, Wilt Chamberlain 13, the newest one being Paul Gasol´s 16, Elgin Baylor 22, Gail Goodrich´s 25, Magic Johnson´s 32, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar´s 33, Shaquille O´Neal´s 34, James Worthy 42, Jerry West´s 44 and Jamaal Wilkes 52.
