Los Angeles Lakers LeBron James is about to enter his 20th year in the NBA. After being selected with the top pic, he started his career with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
But he had already done some workouts for the team two years before he was even eligible for the NBA draft. The assistant coach on Frank Vogel's Laker staff during the 2021-2022 season, John Lucas III, was there.
Lucas was an incredible experience to watch a very young LeBron James before he became what he is today. Lucas mentioned in a recent interview that James reminded him of the greats:
"I think with young LeBron James; you got a little bit of Magic (johnson), you got a little bit of (Tracey McGrady), you got a little bit of MJ, you got a little bit of Kobe, you got a little bit of Kareem, you got a little bit of Earl 'The Pearl'" Lucas opined. "You got a little bit of everybody mixed up, you don't know what's in there, but it's really good... that's what we call 'gumbo.'"
James started playing for the Cavaliers in 2003. He then changed teams in 2010 for the Miami Heat to win his back-to-back championships until 2014, when he returned to the Cavs to end Cleveland's championship drought with a title until arriving at the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018, where he won the last purple and gold championship in 2019-2020.
