In the past five years, the highest-paid athlete title has been battled between three superstars, two are the soccer players Messi & Cristiano Ronaldo, and the other one is the basketball star, LeBron James.
About three years ago, LeBron James was the highest-paid athlete in the world, especially from his off-the-court earnings. Last year was Messi with 135M in revenues, LeBron was the second one with 121.2M, and CR7 was the third on the list.
But this 2023, Cristiano will be the highest-paid as he is getting paid a salary of 200M per year without counting his off-the-field earnings. But with the newest rumors about Leo Messi not renewing with PSG, he could get his throne back.
While Barcelona wants his star back, it is more probable that Messi, after winning the World Cup last year and having won everything possible, can go to Saudi Arabia like Cristiano and get the 300M offer that the Al-Hilal wants to pay him. With this move, he would become the highest-paid athlete ever.
Even though the NBA is one of the wealthiest sports leagues in the world, no player earns as much as Cristiano and Messi. And LeBron's latest contract extension with the Lakers will make him reach around 48 million, but he won't be able to match and court salary like the soccer superstars; still, his business is what makes him earn like Messi and CR7.
