The Los Angeles Lakers were in a bad place in the 2022-23 season until GM Rob Pelinka traded Russell Westbrook to the Utah Jazz and got instead D'Angelo Russell, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Malik Beasley.
Vanderbilt was quick to earn a place in the starting lineup and had a critical role in helping the team turn things around, as the Lakers figured it out with the roster changes and made it to the Western Conference Finals.
Vando has become one of the best defenders in today's game, having the length and agility to match up with guards and forwards. The Lakers will look to build off that success as they have extended Vando for four years and a 48 million deal. Jarred has revealed that he modeled his game after Penny Hardaway and the former 2 times NBA champion with the Lakers Lamar Odom, via 'Run Your Race' Podcast:
“Nah for me, it was Penny, I grew up watching a lot of Penny and really like Lamar Odom. Those are the two guys that I was kind of modeling my game after, at that time. Big guards that can pretty much do anything with the rock, dribble, pass, shoot, like whatever. So, those were the two guys I was modeling my game after at that time.”
The former Laker showed appreciation towards Vanderbilt after hearing the quote: "Game recognize game, always appreciate it when the youngbulls show love for the work I put in. Especially coming from a Laker that's lefty."
