The biggest rivalry in the NBA is the one between the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers. It became a big one thanks to the acquisition of the LA franchise by Dr. Jerry Buss and the dynasty he was able to build with the showtime-era Lakers.
Magic Johnson was the main star and the player who took the lead to win five NBA titles. For the year 1984, Magic and the Lakers already had won two NBA championships after Dr. Jerry Buss bought the franchise.
But it was the first time they were facing the Celtics at the NBA Finals, which was important for the two teams. The Lakers lost and Magic Johnson feels responsible for the defeat and now has opened up about losing the 1984 Finals and how he grinded in the offseason to help the Lakers win the championship the following year.
“This was the first time I made critical mistakes for us to lose that championship,” Johnson said to Jalen Rose “So I cried, Jalen, for three months, all summer I cried because I let my teammates down. I was the reason why we lost the championship. But the first thing I had to do, Jalen, was identify and say to myself, ‘I’m not as good as I thought I was.'”
After HBO's series "Winning Time" ended with the team ending against the Celtics in 1984, the rivalry has gained momentum as fans are looking online to know what happened next for the team.
