The Lakers could've one of the best players in the NBA but instead went in another direction that backfired them

Magic Johnson is one of the biggest Lakers legends the franchise has ever seen, and he only played for the purple and gold to later be the President of Basketball operations.

Johnson got one massive mistake during the 2017 NBA Draft, as he wanted to sign so much Lonzo Ball he passed on getting some of the best active players in the game.

Aside from Lonzo, the Lakers worked out Kansas forward Josh Jackson twice and Kentucky point guard De’Aaron Fox once. But Magic Johnson was so sure about ‘Zo’ that he dubbed him as the “next face” of the Lakers and the team did not even bother to take a look at Duke’s Jayson Tatum, who admitted that he wanted to play for the Lakers.

Tatum said that the Lakers were his favorite team and Kobe Bryant his favorite player growing up. He even referred to the possibility of joining the Lakers as a ‘dream come true’ for him. But as Tatum said, it seemed that the Lakers did not want anything to do with him, which is sad, considering how Tatum has blossomed into one of the league’s top players has been Magic's biggest regret.

Lonzo Ball failed to live up to the expectation set on him

Lonzo Ball didn’t do too badly in Los Angeles. It was just that he was supposed to be better, considering he was the No. 2 pick. The Lakers had high expectations but Zo never lived up to them nor the hype that his father built around him. After only two seasons with the team, the Lakers moved on from Lonzo Ball by including him in the Anthony Davis deal.
