After being swept in the last playoffs, many fans believed that D'Angelo Russell's performances left a lot to be desired in the postseason. The Lakers organization started thinking of finding an upgrade from him but then decided to re-sign him and use him in the regular season, also adding another experienced PG this offseason in Gabe Vincent.
Recent reports by NBA insider Jovan Buha had the Lakers thinking of allowing Gabe Vincent over D'Angelo Russell as the team's starter depending on his work in the upcoming training camp.
But there's another player that could be the starting point guard for the team: Austin Reaves. Reaves has been playing as the team's Shooting Guard, but recent comments by coach Ham saying they want to give the ball more to Reaves, making him more of a playmaker could make Austin the starting PG.
Austin is familiar with the PG role, in fact, with Team USA he has been playing in that position and recently helped the National Basketball squad to defeat the strong Spain. D'Angelo Russell could also start but not as a PG, as he even stated in the previous campaign that he isn't a point guard in the Lakers.
In terms of scoring, playmaking, defense, and all of the other intangibles that go along with piecing together a championship-level rotation, Reaves has the best combination of traits when compared to D'Lo or Vincent. Even if first-round pick Jalen Hood-Schifino were to enter the chat, which is still possible given his upside and own instinctual playmaking, Reaves would have the upper hand because of his experience, particularly in the playoffs.
