Since the moment the Los Angeles Lakers were eliminated by the Denver Nuggets, different names of Point Guards were rumored to be pursued by the Lakers GM Rob Pelinka.
In the LeBron James and Anthony Davis era, the Lakers have been looking to add a third star, especially a playmaking, higher-usage guard. Because of that, names like Kyrie Irving, Damian Lillard, Kyle Lowry, and especially Trae Young have been linked to the purple and gold.
Even into this summer, there were some people in the organization, including LeBron James that were still interested in pursuing Irving, though the front office ultimately prioritized continuity.
Trae Young has long been on Los Angeles' radar, and depending on how his situation unfolds in Atlanta. But one Lakers player has been a standout precisely in what the front office has been looking for, Austin Reaves.
Reaves in the Lakers postseason run was one of the standouts and now that coach Ham has stated wanting to give the ball more to Austin, the young guard could be the in-house solution for the player the team has long been looking to sign.
