There has been a lot of rumours regarding what players should the Lakers add before the season start. Of course everything has been circling towards the Kyrie Irving trade in exchange of Russell Westbrook and two first round picks. But the team should start looking for a couple of free agents in case the trade doesn't go through. There's still a former Lakers player available for the team to pick up in Lance Stephenson.
It's true that Stephenson is going to be 32-years-old before the new season starts, and that goes against what they've done so far that is adding young talent. He is still at the perfect age of a role player. If he isn't a good fit, they could simply waive him. However even though he won't bring up youth, he can bring experience and familiarity, specially with LeBron as they were teammates in 2019 as he averaged 7.2 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists per contest.
Los Angeles Lakers player looks ready to start the new season
Grading the Los Angeles Lakers offseason moves so far
So far The Lakers have added Lonnie Walker IV, Thomas Bryant, Troy Brown Jr, Damian Jones, Juan Toscano-Anderson in this offseason. None of them goes past 30 years old, so adding Stephenson might go against their plan, but let's not forget the team had a tough season last year as they went just 33-49, and finished as the 11th seed in the Western Conference and missed the NBA Playoffs and the play-in tournament.
Lance Stephenson stats last season were not as impressive as you could thought as he only averaged 8.3 points, 3.6 assists and 2.8 rebounds in 46 games in 2021-22 for the Indiana Pacers and Atlanta Hawks. However he has over 50 playoff games of experience and that is the reason why you bring him to the team, to help all those top young players you just sign. Still he can be waived if he doesn't worked as planned.
Lakers have a lot of questions going up into training camp. However it seems that Los Angeles priority is to find a way to get Russell Westbrook off the roster. They have tried via trade for Kyrie Irving, but as days past, it seems it won't happen. Still Lakers priority should be add more player that can help LeBron compete for a title this season.
