Fans have noticed that every Lakers player this season has a No. 6 patch on their jerseys, and here is the reason why.

This year the NBA received one of the saddest news, as one of the most legendary and iconic players to ever play the sport passed away, Bill Russell, a Boston Celtics legend.

Los Angeles Lakers will join the rest of the NBA in celebrating the memory of Russell. Bill passed away in July at the age of 88, promoting the NBA to retire his No. 6 jersey across the league.

More Lakers news:

No other player has ever received the honor. The Lakers icon Magic Johnson called on commissioner Adam Silver to retire Russell's number after passing.

The patch is in honor of this action. Interestingly, LeBron James, Alex Caruso, and other NBA stars will be able to wear their No. 6 jerseys for as long as they stay in the league, as the number has been grandfathered, but it will not be reissued.

LeBron James will be surpassing Magic Johnson with the most assists

The Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James will not only be breaking Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's all-time scoring points record. Still, it will surpass another purple and gold icon: Magic Johnson, but with a major number of assists.
