This is the unusual way Phil Jackson motivated his players

Phil Jackson is arguably the best coach in NBA history. From his time in Chicago he proved his worth. He then moved to Los Angeles to coach the Lakers and continue his legacy. By the end of 2010, he already had the fifth-most wins of any NBA coach. He is also one of only six coaches to have over 1,000 wins without reaching the 1,900 games. According to Shannon Brown, he had an unorthodox way to coach.

According to the two-time NBA champion, “The Zen Master”, had been giving out "meaningful" books back when he was coaching the Los Angeles Lakers, but possibly, started in Chicago. According to Brown, Jackson kept doing the same thing once he became a high-up in the New York Knicks organization. This helped him to win 11 championships as a coach and be selected to 4 NBA all-star games as a coach.

Shannon Brown also recalled the book Jackson gave him during his tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers, from 2009 to 2011. "That one definitely helped me out a lot. Me being from Chicago and the (former U.S.) President being from the same place," Brown explained. "I think every book that (Jackson has) given out he's read, so he might ask you a question about it or something." continued the former player.

Phil Jackson also gave his opinion regarding his type of coaching, and how it helped him to win, giving the example of how he coached Dennis Rodman, during his tenure  with the Chicago Bulls. "The second worst is trying to control them. The best one is to watch them. Just watch them without trying to control them. This piece of advice came in handy later when I was dealing with Dennis Rodman. "

Best coaches in Lakers history

Phil Jackson is undoubtedly a top 5 coach in NBA history. Some people might argue that he is the best coach, period. What is no question is, he is the best coach in Laker history, as he won five championships with the team, the first three in a back-to-back-to-back run and then, a couple of years later, won the other two in a back-to-back run. Pat Riley is the other coach that can enter the discussion as he won 73 percent of the games he coached with the team, a number higher than even Phil Jackson with the Lake Show.
