This offseason was busy for the Los Angeles Lakers, and one of the players that was their priority to bring back the point guard Dennis Schröder, but they failed as the German star signed for two years and 26 million with the Toronto Raptor and offered the purple and gold didn't match.
Instead, GM Rob Pelinka and coach Darvin Ham went for Gabe Vincent, who recently played in the NBA Finals with the Miami Heat against the Nuggets.
After the season opener loss to Denver, Gabe Vincent had his debut but was far from great with a coming off the bench role to play 22 minutes, scored 6 points, had 3/8 FG, 0/4 from 3, one rebound, two assists, and one steal. In the plus/minus, Gabe had -17.
Schröder had an incredible debut with the Toronto Raptors, as he led his new team to the first victory of the campaign being a starter, playing 33 minutes, scoring 22 points with 8/17 FG, 4/8 3-pointers, 3 rebounds, seven assists, and +10 in the plus/minus. This contrast has Lakers fans believing the front office should not have let go of Schröder and should match any offer for the PG.
After the great debut Dennis Schröder had with the Raptors, a reporter asked: “You’re the first player to score more than 20 points in his Raptors debut since Kawhi Leonard.” Schröder quickly shut him down responding: "No, we're not starting that."
